During Geeked Week, Moonrise, a new Netflix exclusive anime from the Shingeki no Kyojin studio and SPY x FAMILY, was revealed.

In addition to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, Netflix shared information about another of its exclusive anime and it is Moonrise, in which the director of Shingeki no Kyojin participates. That was as part of their announcements for Geeked Week, which takes place this week. The idea behind this series comes from the author Tow Ubukata and unfortunately no trailer was shown but the first promotional poster.

In the broadcast made by the company, it was revealed that Masashi Koizuka, who directed the second and third seasons of Shingeki no Kyojin, is in charge of directing Moonrise. That surely puts this new proposal on anyone’s radar. Talking about Ubukata he is the original creator of Mardock Scramble and did the script for Ghost in the Shell Arise. He also worked on Heroic Age and Fafner before focusing on this project.

Tow Ubukata published Moonrise’s novel prologue for free in English on Amazon and that was in December 2018; in charge of the translation in that language was Matt Treyvaud. What is this new anime about? According to Wit Studio “it takes place in the near future and will be set on both the Moon and Earth.” The studio’s president and CEO, George Wada, also made some comments about what to expect.

The plot of Moonrise centers on two men, Jack and Al, as they face various difficulties in the vast outer space. According to Wada, all the action and scenery in the unexplored parts of the Moon will be illustrated with an innovative type of animation that is unlikely anyone has seen before. The CEO of the studio hopes that this project will inspire contemporary life everywhere. Again, it’s a shame there isn’t a trailer for the anime.

It is interesting that the director of Shingeki no Kyojin is involved in Moonrise. In recent times Wit Studio has diversified its projects. In the case of Netflix, it has made three so far, the first of which was Great Pretender, which was very well received. The Bubble movie, despite its lavish and brilliant animation, was not as well received, and Vampire in the Garden felt too fast-paced and short.

It was a series that gave for much more which is a shame. So we will have to wait and see what Moonrise will offer, which currently has no release window. Thanks to Anime News Network for the report.
