One Piece manga Chapter 1053 brought major revelations. We saw the bounties of Luffy, Law and Kid, the introduction of Admiral Ryokugyu and who the new Yonkous, (Emperors of the Sea).
However, this latest news left One Piece fans divided, as in addition to Luffy, the other Emperor is none other than Buggy the Clown.
While some fans really liked the idea, others found it an affront to the seriousness that the Yonkou title represents throughout One Piece’s history.
We are with the first group. Buggy is an excellent choice for Emperor and here are the reasons why.
What are Yonkos?
The Four Emperors are the four most notorious and most powerful pirate captains in the world. They are not allies with each other, nor are they strictly enemies.
These four pirates individually reside in the second half of the Grand Line, known as the New World, exerting impressive influence and control over dozens of other pirate crews and autonomous islands.
The Yonko form one of the Three Great Powers of the One Piece world, along with the Navy and the Shichibukai, and the balance between these forces is what maintains world peace.
So is it incoherent for Buggy to be an Emperor?
No, Buggy being a Yonko in One Piece is extremely coherent, as he has the three fundamental pillars to be an Emperor:
- Underworld influence.
- Several pirate fleets under his command.
- A territory (or perhaps more) under his flag.
Buggy’s influence
He is the leader of an organization called Buggy’s Delivery (pictured above), also known as the “Pirate Dispatch Organization” (海賊派遣組織 Kaizoku Haken Soshiki), a group of pirate mercenaries founded by Buggy himself.
The pirate dispatch organization runs on strength rankings among mercenaries, with Buggy leading them all.
Even former prisoners of Impel Down, considered monsters, are under his wing, providing services on his behalf.
The mighty giant Hajrudin and four other giants, before joining “The Straw Hat Fleet” were labeled as “S-Class” mercenaries and were considered its most profitable members.
Also, when Doflamingo crashed on Dressrosa, Buggy was the one wanted to replace the shortage that the Joker’s weapons were doing on the black market. He filled an important position in the underworld that was suddenly vacant.
Buggy still has a pirate alliance with the Alvida Pirates. Probably the government sees the Alvida Pirates as Buggy’s lackeys, with them being part of its pirate fleet, earning him even more numbers.
a legendary pirate
In addition to his underworld business, Buggy has a very influential name, politically speaking.
After all, he is known as a former apprentice of Gol D. Roger, and former companion of another Emperor, Shanks the Red. In addition to having participated and received much of the credit for the great breakout of Impel Down.
Reader’s view X characters’ view
It’s important to remember that only we readers know that Buggy doesn’t have much physical strength and was elevated to Yonko’s level also for being a typical manga comic relief, like King in One Punch Man and Mr. Satan in Dragon Ball.
However, for the world of One Piece Buggy it has a level to be among Shichibukai. People see him that way. And the rank of Yonko was acquired by this influence.
It’s not necessarily physical strength or monstrous haki that makes someone an Emperor of the Sea. It’s his influence. Yonko are a political position, not a ranking of strength.
Yonko Buggy enriches the story
Currently the Yonkous are Luffy, Buggy, Shanks and Blackbeard. These four pirates have an immense amount of history between them.
They have all interacted in different ways at various times in the past and have strong feelings for each other. This can create very interesting dynamics to explore in the final stretch of One Piece.
